plays in development

in draft co.’s current development slate includes two new works: The Walls Enclosing by Ameer Idreis and Chai? by Malika Daya.

Our approach to development is intentionally fluid, adapting to the needs of each piece and inviting in collaborators—dramaturgs, actors, and community voices—throughout the process to support the work in meaningful ways. Rather than following a rigid timeline, we make space for deep, iterative exploration. This might look like a one-on-one dramaturgy session, a kitchen table reading, or a group workshop focused on form, voice, or world-building. Our goal is to nurture each play from its earliest sparks through to a place of clarity and momentum—toward future sharing and production.

The Walls Enclosing

The Walls Enclosing

Ameer Idreis

Thirteen years since her last visit, Amal returns to Occupied Palestine to visit family. So much has changed, yet so much remains the same. Struggling with her Arabic and unsure whether she fits into her homeland, Amal is embraced by her cousin Hamza, who makes it his mission to make up for lost time. Together, they tour the familiar and the unfamiliar—a corner store, the Hebron Ceramics Factory, and the Apartheid Wall. Just as Amal starts to feel at home again, reconnecting with her grandmother and motherland, tragedy strikes, and Amal is confronted by the brutality of the Occupation.

Malika Daya

Saba and Afzal grow up side by side in the warmth of Jamatkhana, where whispered prayers, a commitment to service, and mischievous undertakings form the foundation of their unspoken bond. Caught in a space between friendship and something more, their connection is steeped in comfort and the rituals of community. When they go separate ways for university, distance becomes another thing they share. Over the years, their paths interweave at Jamatkhana, a sacred space that tethers them to each other. Through shifting seasons and growing pains, they always ask, “Chai?” A question, a hope, a ritual of its own.
